About

Selby Civic Society was founded in 1969, the year of Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Selby to present the Maundy Money at Selby Abbey. The Society celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2019.

Its objectives are to encourage high standards of architecture and town planning in Selby and its environs, and to stimulate public interest in, and care for, the beauty, history and character of the town and its surroundings.

We try to make Selby and its surroundings a better place to live in, work in and visit.

By joining the Society you can help make Selby a more attractive town. Our meetings, visits and other events enable anyone interested in the improvement of the town and its surrounding district to get together in a friendly informal atmosphere. Public meetings are held in Portholme Church, Portholme Road, Selby, YO8 4QF.

In addition, any member can attend our business meetings currently held in the Community Centre, Scott Road, Selby on the second Thursday of every month at 7.30 pm.

As a Selby Civic Society member you will also become an affiliated member of both the regional Yorkshire and Humber Association of Civic Societies (YHACS) and the national body Civic Voice.

Selby Civic Society gratefully acknowledges grants from Selby Town Council, and also thanks the Heritage Lottery Fund for its award towards the initial development of this website.
