stimulating public interest in, and caring for, the beauty, history and character of the town and its surroundings
Events
The Society arranges regular meetings for its members, and these are also open to members of the public. In addition a number of visits to places of interest are organised.
The full programme of events for 2020 is here - but see the notice below
Next Event:
Government restrictions on public gatherings because of the COVID-19 emergency continue, so the Civic Society Committee have decided to extend the suspension of all of their public and committee meetings that were scheduled to take place in September and October.
This includes:
The "Butlins Holiday Camp - The Rise and Fall of an Empire" talk by Stephen Wells on Thursday 17th September. This meeting has been provisionally re-booked for 16th September 2021.
Society Dinner - on 15th October.
Please note that the Annual General Meeting on Thursday 19th November, that was due to be held in Selby Town Hall, has been cancelled but we will now hold the AGM as a "Zoom Video Meeting." Details of how to log in to the meeting will be sent to members in w/c 16th November.
The Society Committee is continuing to conduct as much as possible of its business during this period, using social media, email and video conferencing.
We hope to re-run some of the events that were suspended in March - October in 2021.
Members are important to the Society, so we apologise for the unavoidable suspensions of these events. At present our usual meeting venue - Portholme Church - remains unavailable and our duty-of-care to members and the public who would have attended meant that this was the only option available to us.
